Abstract

The City College of New York is known for its academics along with its recreational and sports activities. The absence of a swimming pool is problematic because it is a part of the opportunities and activities, which students cannot have. Therefore, we have come up with a timeline and budget to reconstruct the CCNY pool in the Marshak Science building. The plan to reconstruct the CCNY pool at Marshak has three primary steps: getting owners (CCNY) approval, planning/ designing the pool and hiring workers for building. The timeline of the pool’s construction should make it so that the pool is completed in 251 days. In consideration of the budget, the planning/ design of the pool is 25’x45′ (1125 sq ft) and the average cost per square foot is $100. The structure would cost $112,500. Hiring workers will cost  $20/ hour per person, 10 workers needed. 8 hours per day, for 2 months. About $89,000. Building/Materials will consist of concrete and gunite pools that require around $29,600 to $50,000 to install, lap-pool install $50,000, pool deck(building) $7,000, filter install $1,005, heater install $1,800-$2,400, water Pump install $2,100-$3,000, pool vacuum $600-$1,249, ladder in swim pool(building) $700 -$900. All the cost added up will make the total budget $102,805-$125,554.

 Introduction

The City College of New York is home to 21 research institutes in the sciences, engineering and social sciences. Not only are we known for providing our academics and faculty support, but we provide the community with a tremendously rewarding college experience, which the Division of Student Affairs is in charge of. In the Division of Student Affairs, swimming was vital for  Recreation & Campus Fitness as they stated: “The mission of the Department of Recreation and Campus Fitness is to provide opportunities for participation in quality recreational and sports activities that address the recreational and athletic needs of The City College community” [1]. Therefore, swimming should be an opportunity that students should have, which is not possible because we don’t have a swimming pool anymore. The old CCNY Swimming Pool is located in the Jeremiah H. Mahoney Hall, in the basement level of the Marshak Science Building. The pool was 25 yards long by 14 feet wide pool has six flow through racing lanes and was open to all members of The City College community. It is especially vital we rebuild it to recreate our swimming team, which will increase the appeal we have on incoming freshmen. The swimming pool, once again being in The City College of New York’s  Marshak Hall Science Building will improve the recreational and athletic aspects of our campus. Other than the problem of not having a swim team anymore, not having a swimming pool creates hardships for various groups and clubs such as the Concrete Canoe club, who needs the pool to for paddling practice, but instead has to go out of campus. Overall, the absence of a swimming pool is cutting off a group of people.

Plan of work:

The plan to reconstruct the CCNY pool at Marshak has three primary steps:

  1. Get owners (CCNY) approval.
  2. Planning/ designing the pool.
  3. Hiring workers and building.

Task 1: CCNY  approval:

Building a new pool is a large project and something that is permanent to The City College of New York. It is being built in a private property, therefore it is very important to gain the approval of the owner, and take into consideration of possible users and owner before building something permanently.

In order to gain the approval of CCNY, it is very important to know what the users think about this problem. Ultimately, this is being built for the residence of City College (City College students). Therefore a survey will be made available to all the CCNY  students. This survey will identify the importance of the pool or not. The survey as follows:

Figure 2: Student surveys on the need for the pool

 POOL SURVEY

We are planning on rebuilding the Pool in CCNY that is located in the Marshak building, and we would like to know your thoughts on reconstruction due. Completing this survey would be really helpful.

Questions:YesNo
1. Are you a CCNY student?
2. Are you interested in the swimming club/ team?
3.Would you like CCNY to have their pool reconstructed?
5. If answered yes to question 5, why?

Thanks for your response, we will take into consideration your thoughts on this issue.

Our company will then take a look at the survey from the students, and our decision-making team members then decide, whether it is a good idea to construct a swimming pool in The City College of New York. If approved, then we will mention this issue to CCNY. All the issues about the need for a swimming pool will be presented to The City College of New York. Upon approval, our company will start its next task. If its rejected, our team will hold this case once again for a better hope of approval.

Task 2: Plan/Basic designing and engineering of the pool:

The next procedure is to make the plan and preparing the design of the pool. First, we will pick a suitable place in the Marshak building of CCNY. This place most likely to be where the pool existed before. Next part is to have our engineers to come up with a suitable design and the length that it may take to build it [2]. The engineer’s’ job here is to identify the structure [2] of the pool and how much space the pool may need. Also, to consider, the number of entrance/ exits that may be required, the source of water for the pool, the color, and overall basic design of the whole swimming pool [2]. Our engineer also helps to identify the of materials that may be needed for this build which may include: galvanized steel/metal, fiberglass, concrete, water supply, polyvinyl chloride plastic and polyurethane foam [3]. Once, the designing part of the project is done. Our company will take suggestions and ready all the materials needed, and prepare for task 3.

Task 3: Hiring workers/ building:

The final task is to hire workers and get into actions. Unlike small pools, this pool will require many workers. Our company will partner with pool contractors companies within New York city and manage workers to start the physical building process of the pool [2]. The building of the pool will be started from here, and once finished, it will be made available to the CCNY students.

Timeline:

  • Our team will conduct a survey online made available to all CCNY students, and email will send out to all the CCNY students to inform the amount of the survey. The survey will take a maximum of 2 months.
  • Once our team introduces the issue to CCNY, it may take from 3-4 weeks for approval, if it failed the first time, the time may be delayed to 2 more months.
  • Once approved by The City College of New York, the process of getting our engineer’s team to design the pool, and estimate the materials will take 2 weeks.
  • the process of hiring workers by making connections will take in a total of 3 weeks. It will take 2 weeks to get the partnership with the pool contractors, and readying the workers will take another week.
  • The actual construction/ building of the pool to be fully completed will take 2 months if everything goes as it was planned.
  • The entire project for a completely new pool in the CCNY  Marshak building and be ready for students use will take 5 months and 1 week. (235 days)?
